December 8, 2014- Hartford School District’s Outstanding Teacher Awards 2014

We’re proud of all of our outstanding teachers, particularly those who have been awarded this year! See below to learn more about the teachers and their awards from each of our five schools:

White River School [WRS]: Mary Ann Rankin, 3rd Grade Teacher

Award: UVM VT Outstanding Teacher

Mrs. Rankin, WRS 3rd Grade Teacher attended a ceremony as part of The University of Vermont Outstanding Teachers Recognition Day.  She was awarded a certificate by Dr. Fayneese Miller, Dean of the College of Education and Social Services, Martha Allen and Luke Foley, Vermont's 2014 Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Rankin was recognized for being a "passionate advocate for her students..." and for her work in promoting technology integration in the content areas.  We thank you, Mrs. Rankin for your tireless dedication to the students, staff and families at WRS!*

Ottauquechee School [OQS]: Kaleigh Soule, Physical Education

Award: VT Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance Rising Star

The Rising Star is a teaching award that “recognizes an outstanding beginning educator who demonstrates great commitment and promise towards the promotion of teaching wellness and physical activity.”*

Dothan Brook School [DBS]: Amy Wheeler, Counselor & Linda Gilbert, 2nd Grade Teacher

Amy Wheeler, Counselor

Award: VT New School Counselor of the Year

The Vermont School Counselor Association (VTSCA) is a division of the American School Counselor Association and represents professional school counselors at every academic level (K-12) throughout Vermont. Our Mission: The VTSCA expands the image and influence of professional school counselors through advocacy, leadership, collaboration and systemic change. VTSCA empowers professional school counselors with the knowledge, skills, linkages, and resources to promote student success in the school, the home, the community, and the world.*

Linda Gilbert, 2nd Grade Teacher

Award: Presidential Award Finalist for Math & Science Teaching

In addition to helping DBS to achieve superior test scores on NECAP tests, Linda Congratulations to Linda Gilbert, one of was named a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching (paemst.org). This is a very prestigious award and it is a tremendous honor to be named as a state finalist.*


Hartford Memorial Middle School [HMMS]: Nicole Bonnett, Team Altitude

HMMS Teacher of the Year 2013-2014

Nicole continues to go above and beyond her teaching duties with student council and pilot projects. Nicole is always positive and an advocate for all of her students.

Nicole shows exemplary commitment to Team Altitude, her colleagues, Student Council, and HMMS as a whole community. Her efforts make HMMS a better place for students are tireless and admirable. She is a cheery presence on staff, always looking to help others and support camaraderie. Though she sings her philosophy loud and proud, she is respectful and inquisitive of others!*

Hartford High School: Shannon Johnson, Social Studies

Award: UVM VT Outstanding Teacher

During her career, Shannon’s versatility, grounded in a solid knowledge base, has allowed her to teach a variety of courses. However, Shannon’s success as a teacher goes far beyond what she knows and is as much attributable to whom she is: an engaging, even-tempered, sincere, and conscientious educator who has the gift of being able to successfully interact, understand and connect with 21st Century students. In addition to her pedagogical prowess, Shannon gives of her time by not only chairing the Faculty Scholarship Committee but also fills the position of Student Council Advisor. *
