Empty Bowls Filling Bellies

Empty Bowls Filling Bellies DATE: 04-08-2016

April 8, 2016- On Tuesday, March 22, Dothan Brook School [DBS] held its first Empty Bowl Event. Students made and glazed bowls in art class that families purchased for a donation, filled with soup, and then enjoyed for dinner. The event, judging by the numbers, was a great success:

  • 112 3rd-5th graders made the bowls in art class

  • 300 bowls glazed by K-5th graders

  • 200 bowls purchased

  • $1,600 raised for the DBS Friday Food Bag Program

Finnie Trimpi, DBS Art teacher, brought the idea to the school community. "I've attended Empty Bowl events in the past. It's a great way to bring communities together while raising awareness of hunger needs. It's important for students to be creative and see their work go toward a bigger cause."

Ms. Trimpi was instrumental in the artistic prep-portion of the event, inviting local artists to donate their time and skills; Grade 5 Teacher, Cherrie Torrey orchestrated the dinner and the 5th graders gained community service experience as staffers at the dinner. In addition to DBS community members, local businesses provided the soup, bread, and milk. This joint organizational effort was supported by several DBS staff members who volunteered to host the night of the event.
